What Causes Medial Epicondylitis?

Medial epicondylitis, or golfers’ elbow, is caused by inflammation in the tendons that attach to the inside of the elbow. This type of injury is usually caused by repetitive motions that involve the wrist, such as typing or construction work. Pain at the inside of the elbow is common and can be an acute injury or a chronic condition. Posture, sleep, and nutrition can also affect your chance of developing medial epicondylitis.

When working with a physical therapist, you will be able to identify why your elbow pain has occurred. You will also be able to develop exercises to help prevent it from happening again.

Common Symptoms of Medial Epicondylitis

  • Point tenderness and pain at the inside of the elbow
  • Weakness in grip strength and wrist flexion
  • Decreased mobility at the elbow secondary to pain
  • Pain going into the forearm or hand at times.
  • Decreased ability to perform repetitive tasks like typing or golfing

How to Treat Medial Epicondylitis

Medial elbow pain is addressed first by decreasing the inflammation of the flexor tendon group. This is done through manual therapy targeting both the muscles and joints around the forearm and elbow. It is important to address any mobility restrictions above and below the site of pain to identify any problematic restrictions.

Next you will work to decrease any provocative motions that may be causing repetitive stress in the first place. This may be simple postural changes or using different tools at work. Finally, it will be important to strengthen the tendon back to full strength. This will involve specific exercises targeting the tendons that attach to the inside of the elbow.

How long will it take for me to get better?

Medial Epicondylitis can vary depending on several factors, including how long symptoms have been present. This issue may be resolved in a few weeks to a few months. It may take longer to address other underlying issues that are causing your elbow pain, such as a nerve issue. When working with our staff, we will ensure you have the best plan to help you heal as quickly as possible.
