Breast Cancer Awareness: Recovery and Physical Therapy
October is a significant month dedicated to raising awareness about two vital health causes. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Physical Therapy Month. This period serves not only to honor those affected by breast cancer but also to highlight the essential role physical therapy plays in recovery and rehabilitation. With over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, understanding the importance of comprehensive care post-diagnosis is crucial.
In this blog, we’ll dive into the importance of early detection and explore how physical therapy supports breast cancer recovery. We also encourage you to get involved and help make a difference this October!
Why Breast Cancer Awareness is Important?
Breast cancer is a major health issue, with about 1 in 8 women diagnosed in their lifetime, and is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the US. Early detection through regular screenings can significantly improve treatment outcomes; the five-year survival rate is about 99% when the cancer is caught early.
Awareness campaigns encourage individuals to familiarize themselves with their bodies, recognize early warning signs, and understand their family histories. This is why education plays a critical role because it empowers individuals to take proactive steps in monitoring their breast health. Resources from organizations like the American Cancer Society are invaluable for boosting knowledge and empowering both yourself and your loved ones.
It’s also important to remember that breast cancer isn’t exclusive to women, and about 1% of cases in the U.S. occur in men. This reminds us that awareness for all genders is also a vital part of fostering education and understanding.
Breast Cancer Surgery Recovery with Physical Therapy
Surgical interventions, such as lumpectomies or mastectomies, often leave patients facing numerous physical challenges. Following these procedures, patients may experience pain, decreased mobility and other complications, including lymphedema—a condition characterized by swelling due to lymph fluid build-up. This can occur when lymph nodes are removed or damaged during surgery and can lead to delays in recovery if not managed.
Physical therapy is instrumental in addressing these challenges and facilitating a smoother recovery. Here’s how physical therapy contributes to post-surgical rehabilitation:
1. Range of Motion
Post-surgical stiffness and pain can significantly limit a patient’s range of motion, particularly in the shoulders and arms. Physical therapy focuses on tailored exercises to gradually improve flexibility and mobility. Restoring movement is vital not only for daily activities but also for overall quality of life. Therapists guide patients through specific movements that promote healing and help reduce discomfort, allowing them to reclaim their independence.
2. Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a common concern for breast cancer survivors. Physical therapists trained in lymphedema management employ techniques to promote lymphatic drainage and minimize swelling. These methods may include manual lymphatic drainage, compression garments, and targeted exercises to encourage circulation. Effective management can alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of infections, enhancing the overall well-being of patients.
3. Pain Alleviation
Chronic pain can linger long after surgery, impacting daily life and emotional well-being. Physical therapy addresses this issue by employing a combination of therapeutic modalities, such as heat, cold, and electrical stimulation, alongside customized exercise programs. These interventions are designed to reduce muscle tightness and enhance circulation, helping patients manage their pain more effectively.
4. Providing Emotional Support
Recovery from breast cancer is as much about emotional healing as it is about physical rehabilitation. The supportive environment fostered in physical therapy sessions can significantly alleviate the psychological burdens patients face. Therapists serve not only as health professionals but also as compassionate allies, listening to patients’ concerns and providing encouragement throughout their recovery journey.
Recommended Exercises
To aid recovery, incorporating specific exercises into your routine is essential. Here are a few recommended exercises you can try:
Chest Stretch with Bent Elbows:
- Lying on your back with elbows pointing to the ceiling, place your hands behind your head.
- Let your elbows fall open to the sides, holding for 10 seconds.
- Repeat this movement 3-5 times, 1-2 times a day.
Serratus Punches:
- Lying on your back, raise your arm to 90 degrees.
- Punch up towards the ceiling, relaxing the shoulder blade down.
- Do 10-15 repetitions in each set with 2-3 sets, 1-2 times daily.
Push Up with a Plus:
- Stand arms-length from a wall, hands at shoulder height.
- Lean towards the wall, push yourself away, allowing shoulder blades to spread apart.
- Repeat for 10-15 repetitions, 2-3 sets, 1-2 times daily.
These exercises focus on restoring mobility, strength, and flexibility while addressing common concerns following breast cancer surgery. Always consult with your physical therapist before starting any new exercise regimen to ensure they are appropriate for your specific recovery needs.
